Easter is one of those things, like Christmas, with a religious nut at its centre that has gradually been smothered by chocolate and silver paper over the years. The Christian view is that it commemorates the death and resurrection of Christ, but if you’re a Pagan it’s all about the miracle of spring and rebirth after the deathly months of winter – hence the bunny and those symbolic eggs. But what is the truth? In the internet age where information … Read more

The Key is about to hit the shelves, continuing the story of Sanctus. So – carried away on a wave of euphoria – I thought I’d give some stuff away to those of you, my devoted readers, kind enough to actually pre-order it. One of the nicest things you can do for a writer is pre-order their next book. This is because the print run of a book is determined, in part, by pre-orders and they also have a … Read more

I’m heading to Bucharest next week for the launch of Sanctus at the Gaudeamus book fair. This will be my ninth and last trip of the year and I’m really looking forward to it, for many reasons. Firstly, I’ve never been to Romania even though it’s been on my visit wish list for years. Secondly, my Romanian publisher Allfa (who also publish Robert Harris) has done an absolutely amazing job of whipping up a storm of expectation so great that … Read more

The kind folks at Worthing Lime Cafe Book Club have invited me to be guest speaker next tuesday 31st May. Details are here, but by all accounts it’s quiet a nice sociable affair involving quizzes and gentle evening fun. If you bring books I’ll sign them, or I think you can buy them there. Or you could just ignore the book element and just come for the very attractive and intelligent company you will find in the audience.

It gives me huge pleasure to announce that Record Publishing has just bought Brazilian translation rights to Sanctus, not least because it’s a massive bit of map for my daughter to colour in. I’m particularly pleased because Brazil is one of the key locations in the book, so I’m chuffed that it will be coming out there in Portuguese.

Yesterday (14th April) the book finally hit the bookshelves. It’s been a year since SANCTUS sold at the ‘ash cloud’ London Book Fair and it has seemed like ages, and also no time at all, that publication has come round. I headed up to London yesterday afternoon with my wife and checked into the Meridian opposite Waterstone’s so we could have a prime view of the huge projection of the book cover on the four storey store front. It’s a … Read more

I’ve just written an article on writing Sanctus, which is now here on the Crime Time website. While you’re there have a look around, it’s full of good stuff, useful reviews and lots of writers talking about their craft. When I was writing Sanctus and learning as I went along I was almost obsessively interested in how other writers went about their business. What did they do, how many words did they write a day, to outline or not to outline? … Read more

Kontinents have secured translation rights for Sanctus. They also publish such luminaries as (in Latvian, to keep you on your toes): Dens Brauns, Džefrijs Dīvers, Diks Frensiss All of which has got me wondering what both SANCTUS and my name will look like when they have been lovingly rendered into Latvian.
